Default A/C compressor question

This might be an obvious question but if I use the heater in my car, is the A/C compressor engaged? I had some issues with the A/C when using it to blow cold which relate to a fucked up compressor but now that the season has changed I really haven't used it. Now that winter is coming, I want to see if I can get away with at least using the heater.

The compressor engages for defrost or bi-level heat/defrost, but not for straight heat. If your A/C isn't working very well, defrost will take lots longer. If you don't want it to run at all, just unplug it.

I getcha, I'll see how it goes, just trying to give myself some time to save some cash to fix it. My mechanic said if the compressor is bad which it might be, its best to replace the entire A/C system which would be right around $600?!?!?
