Default WS6 power steering cooler

I ordered a new return line from GM and it came in the mail and it must be for a car without a ps cooler because the hose is exactly the correct length to the reservoir. Out of curiousity could I just bypass the cooler all together but how nessecary is the cooler? Could I get away with not using the cooler. I'm probably just gonna buy some hose and use a barb splicer to connect them together, but if i can get away without using the cooler I will. Just looking for some input on this. Thanks, Nick

I might delete mine. Lots of people have them leak which causes coolant and power steering fluid to mix together. Obviously not good.

I don't feel that the cooler is all that necessary. They didn't come standard until 00' so it must not be all that important. I'm replacing my pump (100k miles + autox = death) with a reduced flow unit, so it shouldn't require a cooler or die again. If anything i'll get a real cooler for it that doesn't run the risk of causing problems or use already very hot fluid to cool another fluid.

I think the PS cooler was more of a marketing item for the WS6 rather than a fuctional cooler.

I plan on bypassing it by installing the non-PS cooler rad hose and running the return line straight back up to the pump.

Get rid of that cheesy *** factory power steering "heater".
Just put that full length upper radiator hose on.
Go to Advance Auto with $30.00 and get a fluid cooler.
Put it on in 15 minutes.
Have actual, real, PS fluid cooling.

Hmm...I like that. So, all you do then is just route the hoses through the cooler and that's it?

You have the correct hose. The distance from the cooler is about the same as the distance from the reservoir.

BTW - Its best to have some type of cooling. Its needed to protect the pump. There's more info in an article linked in this thread: https://ls1tech.com/forums/suspensio...taminated.html

Yes.

I personally replaced the hose that connects to the bottom of the reservoir just as preventative maintenance. It really takes 15 minutes. I could probably do it in 5 minutes now.

No its the return line from the rack. It's long enough to go to the reservoir but not to the cooler.

What year is your car and what part number is the return hose you received?

I second that, as I'd like to do this as well. I was going to install the OEM cooler but screw that thing...

That link doesn't show anything.

Hell yes it works....like a charm. Mine has been on there for a long time, its perfect.

The factory cooler is a pathetic joke. The aftermarket one I used gets warm to the touch only. Sometimes pretty warm if I am doing alot of stop and go city driving and its 95* outside. You touch your factory cooler in the middle of the winter in Alaska after a 30 minute drive and you'll have 3rd degree burns on your hand.

Do it. Its a great, cheap mod. And your ps pump will last longer because its kept cooler.

damn ok I'll try it.. cause mine's leaking found the smell of power steering fluid in my coolant reservoir w/no anitfreeze which I wouldnt doubt thats in the reservoir of my PS. That link was just a $20 Power Steering Oil Cooler from autozone. Where can I find your write up at?

also I rather pay $30bucks instead of $200 just for an OEM ps cooler from the dealer

Check out this thread. It helped me decide which cooler I wanted. I picked a 24" long cooler for both the transmission and power steering. https://ls1tech.com/forums/general-m...success-4.html

find the part number for the upper radiator hose w/o power steering cooler. Install that new hose. buy a p/s cooler kit, connect the two small hoses that went to the upper rad hose, to the p/s cooler. flush your cooling system with cooling system flush. flush p/s system. Your welcome.
