Default Thermostat Question

2000 WS6

I know these cars run good with some heat in them, should I put a cooler thermostat in my car while the motor is apart for a cam install ? Im thinking like a 180* stat assembly or do I keep the stock stat and bring the fans in sooner ? If I get a new stat, where is the best place to get it ?

If you want a new stat, any parts store has them. But there really isn't a great reason for going with a colder one, you won't feel the miniscule power increase but you might see it on a dyno.

Lower coolant temps is always a good thing. Get the 160 they run about $50 for the entire assembly. The 180 wouldn't be much of a difference to be worth it IMO.

I disagree that lower coolant temps are always a good thing. The stock thermostat is designed to keep oil temps hot enough to burn off condensation. This is one of the reasons OEM thermostats are generally around 190-200F.

In my opinion, the dissadvantages outweigh any advantages of the colder stat.

I have a 160 and have had no problems at all. Actually went with a stock replacement and ended up going back to a 160. Oil pressure dropped significantly and it just ran slower. I know it sounds crazy but I'm serious.

just because the T stat is 160............does not mean that the coolant temp will be 160............so dont worry about the engine being to "cold"

It will still have plenty of heat to burn off condensation. Even though its a 160 thermostat your coolant temps will defiantly be somewhat higher that 160 especially during the blazing summer heat and stop and go traffic. I have been running my 160 hypertech without any issue.

My two cents: I have a 160 in my car. If was to do it over again, I wouldn't change it out unless I was getting symptoms of it sticking/staying shut. I can see going ahead and doing it on a high mileage motor though, as if to avoid the problems I mentioned previously.... I would just install a manual fan switch or reprogram the fans to come one sooner.

Also the temp was designed for emissions also, your cooling capabilities are what really set your running temp but whatever.
