Door Lock Question
Door Locks and ttop locks.
How does it work?
Do the locks come with keys already cut, or does it come as a blank lock you have to have set?
Are the ttop locks and door locks the same?
The reason I want to do this is, when I had a ke cut from my vin, it didnt work, did it again, still nothing. So now I have one old key thats barely working the doors....and one ttop.
Lost a ttop a while back and bought a used one so the lock is differnt and its a pain in the *** to have three dif keys. Ignition, 2doors and one ttop, and one ttop?
Well i guess my plan wa to replace all 4 locks with the same lock and have one key made and lock it up in my maintenance file, so if i ever need another cut I have a fresh one to get a new cut, but if anyone has any better advice that would be cheaper Im all ears.
Im not exaclty sure what a locksmith is capable of, like rekeying locks or making keys for preexisting locks or even how much that stuff runs so I wanted to get yalls advice
Thanks
Josh
... The ignition key is pretty simple and cheap if done correctly. ... If you or a friend have an Ohmmeter lying around, take a reading off the pelit in the center of the key. __OR__ Go to the Dealer and tell them you need the VATS Value Rating of the key. Theyll test it for you and to my understanding, its FREE.
Use that number to look for the corresponding Vats Value Rating. ... Log on to eBay and type in "GM Vats key #_??_" ... the blank will run about $8. Take it to a local locksmith and you got yourself a spare. ...(take it to an actual locksmith. NOT Home Depot!)
VATS #__ Value... (K)OHMS (Set your meter to the 20k ohm setting)

P.S. The dealer wants about $70+ for a replacement key! ...Im getting qweezy just thinking about how much the dealer would want for an new ignition cylinder, deck, door and t-top lock, plus a dual set of keys!
If you just outwright need to change it all because you lost them or an ex has the other set then do what you gotta do. But if not then what I suggested should run you $20-$30.
Good luck!

When the dealer "cut" your keys, did they cut them or use a punching tool? If they cut them on a rotary cutter, their machine could be out of calibration. Punched keys are much more accurate.
The locksmith you take your new t-top lock to should be able to take apart one of your original locks and tell what the key code is from the inside of the lock. That way, the locksmith can cut more keys for you and you'll only have to re-key one lock.
I talked to a lock smith I use up at the shop and he explained to me the rekeying process so this weekend Im gonna yank them all out and key them to a Key the dealer cuts from the vin. (I dont think the dealers cutter was out of calibration cause the ignition key worked fine, I think my locks have been replaced once.)
And Im just gonna take him the ttop I dont have a key for and have him do that one for me.
He said the rekeying proccess is easy as hell and after he explained it to me Im sure I can do it.
