engine hoist

engine hoist
so i bought an engine hoist to pull my motor out. first off, i realize some may argue that its easiest from the bottom but that wasnt an option for me. i stripped the motor down to the block(it was shot anyway). the engine hoist was a bit small i guess cause the only way i could get it out was to come in from the side. this will not work for putting it in, i wont have enough slack to mate it to the tranny easily. my question is, is there way to identify the correct size engine hoist that will work so i can know before i see it that it is big enough?

Take the hood off. Trust me, if you're coming out and going in through the top, taking the hood off saves you a world of trouble. As far as it being too small, I assume you mean you were hitting the bumper cover with the hoist and couldn't reach the motor? Make sure the boom on the hoist is extended all the way out, this setting is usually 1/2 ton, and your aluminum-block LS1 is nowhere near that.

I want to say you need a 2 ton hoist. I have a 2 ton and it has three different lengths (2 ton being the shortest boom, then 1 ton, then 1/2 ton when it is fully extended).
I'm guessing you went the cheap route and bought a 1 ton?
J/K, if that is the case though, see if you can exchange it for the 2 ton?

I had the exact same problem, comes out fine, putting it in is hardd. My step dad, a very tall and built man, helped me get it in, we physically pushed it to mate it with the tranny while the motor was held. If I had the money I woulda bought another stand, but this was borrowed and I didn't see myself needing one soon.
