180 amp alt.??
you most likely do not need a higher output alternator than a stock 100-amp. Only time you would need a higher output alternator is if you have a massive electrical load to power, do you?
higher output alternators do not simply output more power all the time, they require higher engine rpms usually over 2000 rpm before they start exceeding stock alternator output. At idle up to 2000 they are slightly better than stock output if at all.
you can simply change out the voltage regulator and make any alternator higher output, problem is it will overheat and die. This is what inexpensive high output alternators are.
where did you find a 180-amp alternator for cheap?
many times one of the three diodes in the rectifier will go bad, the alternator will still work but produce less power especially at low rpms. People don't know this and incorrectly rationalize that the alternator is weak for other reasons and think they need a higher output alternator.
