Default Gas Hand

The gas hand on my camaro goes crazy sometimes. I can fill it up and it'll go way past the F or sometimes i can have half a tank in it and when i start it, it will say empty and my check gauges light will come on but if i turn it off and back on the hand goes back to normal. Anyone know what might cause this. Thanks

Don't know what causes it, but a good thump on the dash will always fix mine.

I think this is just one of those things they all do. Both of my F bodies did this =\

+1

Mine every once in a while just goes retarded. It starts sweeping from about half of tank to e and back.

It's possessed

I always track my gas on my trip gauge. I don't trust it too much.

Ok I can fill my car up and drive it the hand will show full. If i leave it parked idling it will just fall to empty but if i shake the car the hand will jump back up to normal. Is it possible I just need to run some fuel system cleaner through it maybe theirs some build up on the float assembly from where its been sitting or maybe a ground loose?

Very common issue for GM's, it's usually the fuel pump sending unit.

If shaking the car fixes it, you most likely need a sending unit.

Ok now if its above half a tank its fine. If it falls below that it will just stick on empty. I'm gettin a fuel level sensor high voltage code so I'm gonna say it is the sending unit. thanks

Mine also does this. It is not as erratic as you mention. I just keep track of the miles and I know how many miles I get out of a tank from my driving routine. I rely on my average gas mileage, which I calculate every time I refuel, and I know how many more miles I have. My needle will read empty and when i refuel, I only pump 12 gallons. When the low fuel light comes on, I pump 14 gallons. It doesn't bother me to the point of chaning the fuel pump/sending unit. If it dies, I will change it.
