hatch struts rubber piece

I replaced my hatch struts, and the old ones had a rubber/black foam piece going around the strut rod and around the mounting bolt. I made a slit in them to remove them and put them on the new ones. I didn't not put them back on. Are they noise reducers or what are they for?

When you take the strut out, they slide off. No need for a slit.

They are there to keep dust/dirt out of the area and to give a cleaner look to the interior.

I'll have to put them back in somehow. I couldn't see how they would come out, except over the mounting area which is the size of a quarter.

put a little wd40 on em and those suckers will slip over the ends

I forget exactly how, but recall that the way to do this replacement is to reach behind the hard paneling to release the strut and then take it out with the rubber boot still on. Then the rubber boot goes over the new strut and the whole thing gets installed in the reverse.
