1999 was the crossover year where you could have a "LS" based engine (5.3L,6.0L) or a Gen 1 vortec 5.7L. My 99 Sierra has the same engine. Vortec Gen 1 have a ignition distributor. VORTEC LS based DO NOT have an ignition distributor.
You also cannot associate the word "Vortec" specifically with one engine series since LS and NON LS based engines both came with Vortec induction (Heads). You can have a GEN1 vortec 5.7L or even a Gen 3 (LS Based) 5.3L or 6.0L with Vortec "package" so the VORTEC is not engine series specific.
good god people are still blaming things on the ethanol in gas??that is completely ridiculous!
at the very least i hope you are replacing all the the valve springs, there is no logical reason for the valve to just all the sudden stick unless it has been bent because of contact with a piston.
I could have been a rocker issue or a spring issue, maybe some mechanical over-revving? not easy with an automatic, but is possible
Thanks for the input everybody.
