02 z28 hard start

Default 02 z28 hard start

The car is an 02 z28 as the title states. Recently it takes a good 4 to 5 seconds of cranking before the car starts. Some times, it's fine. I did notice that if the key is in the off position or out of the car and I put the gas peddle to the floor, let off, and then put the key in and start it; it starts just fine.

The car has Longtubes, off road y, and exhaust from there back. I do spray the car occasionaly. The car use to do it every now and then after a spray run, but not consistantly. Now it's doing it all the time. It has a diable handheld with some parameters not set by me as well. What could it be?

could be the fuel pump not priming when you turn the key on. when you turn the key to the on position can you hear the pump priming?

I had this problem before. Change my stock fuel pump to walbro and never had that problem again. One of my buddies had this problem on his camaro as well. He told me there is a check valve or something that fails on the stock pumps, and causes you to motor to turn over a few times before it starts up.

Where is there a check valve, in the tank I assume?

255lph's are cheap, but I wont buy anything until I can single outhe problem. The car drives and acts flawless as usual when idling and driving. Just takes for ever to start!

Once my car started it would idle and run fine as well. I think the valve is apart of the fuel pump itself.

Once i changed out the fuel pump the car would start up within the first crank.

Sounds like you and your friend have the same problem. If thats the case with my car it would make sense. I assume that the check valve stops fuel from draining back into the tank/pump? So basically there is no pressure in the rail and it dry cranks until the fuel reaches the rails. Did you ever have to pump the gas when it was cranking?

yeah, sometimes i would give the gas pedal a couple taps and it would help it start.

Damn, I don't mind buying a pump, just not in the mood to swap one. Anyone know of a possible way to check out the valve or any other test procedure? I do plan to check pressure in the rail and do the other things suggest. Just curious.

yeah I don't blame you haha. I cut a access panel right above the fuel tank so I didn't have to drop the tank.

As far as I know the pump runs fine once the motor starts, just a PIA hearing it turn over so many times. Anyways good luck man!

Thanks man, so I guess unless you make a custom access panel, aka cut a hole, you have to drop the tank? I just hope someone will chime in and say theres a way to check the valve lol.

dunno about checking the valve but yeah if you want to get to the fuel pump you have to drop the tank

Damn, was hoping the camaro stuff would be easier but it's not lol. Sucks what ever is wrong with it. Drove the car about close to 300 miles on the highway the otherday and put an fti stall in. Car drove great and still does. I just have to pump the gas to start it!

While the fuel pump may be a cause of this, I would clean your IAC valve.

I popped the fuel cap off because I was going to take the fuel line for the n20 of my schradar valve to test fuel pressure. When I did this the hard cranking magically disapeared. I do however have trans fluid dripping out of my bell housing after this trans install ---_---
