What does an air pump relay do?

What does an air pump relay do? Or what does an air pump do? I was checking my car yesterday to see if any fuses have gone bad and I saw that i'm missing a relay for "AIR PUMP"

it's your secondary air injection system. if you have stock exhaust manifolds you'll notice a pipe going to the top of each one. they inject air into your exhaust to warm the cats up quicker so they are more effective. a lot of people delete it so if your relay was missing that's probably what the previous owner did.

Also whenever I let go of the gas, my car makes a supreme farting noise. My car is all stock, just wondering what it could be.

YOu should have a code set if the relay is not there. The relay operates the air injection motor, the pcm uses it to operate the air system and to perform a bunch of tests on the 02 sensors and check if the cats are working properly etc. If the car is bone stock it should be working. Sounds like you car was modded, maybe the cats were gutted etc?
