Fuel gauge dies while driving.

Fuel gauge dies while driving.
Does anyone have an idea as to what would make your fuel gauge read empty even though I know I have fuel. When it does die out, the CHECK GAUGE light comes on which is understandable, but it will come back on, then back off. Is it a bad relay or fuse? Or do I need a new fuel pump.

Sounds like a dead spot in the sending unit itself. Time to cut a trap door..

OK, before you drop the tank, run a couple of tanks of gas with techron fuel cleaner (concentrated system cleaner, not the more diluted one) or redline fuel system cleaner. Over time there can be deposits on the sending unit; I have heard these products can help dissolve the buildup. Worth a try vs. new sending unit and dropping the tank.

Question: How many miles are on your Firehawk? If you are dropping the tank and it has a few miles on it, it might not be a bad idea to just replace the entire fuel pump. Get a good GM one though since it's a big job. It will come with the level sensor. I think just the level sensor will run you around $100 anyways so might as well just replace the entire pump IMO.
