Default dropping column for ignition switch

I tried to replace my ignition switch on the lower part of the column last weekend mostly following these instructions:
http://shbox.com/ignsw/ign_switch_repl.html (I have a LS1 and the instructions are based on an LT1).

I did not disconnect the shaft in the engine bay and I only loosened the 3 bolts at the base of the column to the firewall to give about 1/2 inch from the flange to the bolt head since I was not planning to remove column as the instructions indicate (I've searched an most people here just say to drop the column from the 2 upper bolts and that will give you enough room). After removing the column to dash nuts the column would only drop to about the bottom of the threaded stud that holds the column, no where near as far as shown in the pics on the site above, and not enough to remove the switch.

Basically time ran out on me and I put everything back so I could get to work. I'm wondering now if I forgot to disconnect a harness somewhere and that was keeping the column from dropping further?

Can someone who has done this in-car share their experiance/process?

Thanks
