Steering wheel replacement What is the process to replace the steering wheel in a 98 Trans Am, are there any complications because of the airbag? My steering wheel looks pretty raggedy and I need to purchase a new one. Or get a steering wheel cover from redline which looks to be more expensive than a new steering wheel. Thanks
Pull the air bag fuse, then disconnect the yellow air bag connector under the steering column. This ensures the air bag will not deploy. You'll need a special steering wheel puller to remove the wheel itself, any auto parts store will carry it. It's not a very hard job at all.
The steering wheel splines are keyed to help you line it back up. But you can force it on the wrong way, so be careful with that. It helps to put the front wheels pointing straight forward before removing the wheel.
