Default Trunk Release Button?

When I bought my T/A, there were a few things wrong with it; among them was the fact it was entirely missing a trunk release button. The previous owner said he had no idea about it. Am I missing just the button or the entire wiring system, or...? I'm extremely confused as to where to start fixing the problem. Any insight? Thanks!

All cars had them. Do you just have a hole in the dash where it was installed originally? If you pull back the hatch carpet, do you have an original latch with wires going to it?

there should be a small two wire plug that hangs down behind the panel by your knees under the steering, below the headlamp switch

I have a spare one if you need it.

Anyways, its under the steering column on the left. It is a simple two pin plug. The button is yellow, sits top left, and is mounted in a section of plastic trim that sits right where your knees are at. Two 8mm bolts hold it in.
