Default evap system trouble

I have to lower the gas tank for evap system leak check. Likely the vent solenoid is bad (code PO442). A shop narrowed it down to the tank area. But, the tank must now be dropped. Is it worth doing at home? can you get the axle down far enough with the car on jackstands to get the tank out from on top of the axle? I've done spring/shock swaps, but I don't want to start something that's not appropriate for the garage.

Yes, you can drop it without a lift. The LS1 tank is easier to drop than the LT1 tank, because of the flexible filler tube. Unbolt the sway bar and shocks to let the rear end droop enough. There is a brake line bracket attached to the frame rail. Unbolt it and the lines will droop with the axle, so you don't have to disconnect or bleed them later. Make sure you get the rear of the car as high as you safely can on the jack stands. And make sure the tank is near empty of fuel.
