Default 98 camaro overheating

I have a 98 Camaro SS 5.7..... the car has never done this before. fluids are perfect and had the water pump and thermostat changed about a year ago. on the freeway temperature gauge is normal. at half. but on the street it goes up to about 3/4 and the fan turns on super hard. this has never happened before. especially not my gauge going up. why only on the street??

The reason its hotter is because there isnt as much air flow on the street. Do you have a coolant leak somewhere? check to see that there is nothing blocking air flow in front of the radiator.

This. And it's also possibile to have a blockage inside the radiator, from sludge build-up and such. If there is a lot of mileage on the stock radiator and/or irregular coolant maintenance then you might have some issues in this regard.

But start with the basics and check for missing pieces of the air dam, outside blockage of the radiator, low coolant/coolant leak, etc.

Might be a stupid question, but OP did you reuse the coolant you drained when you did the water pump/tstat or replace it with new dexcool?

If you are running the original OEM radiator that came in the car new. It is your problem. Get a new one from rock auto.com for around $100 and your problem will be solved.
