Default Is this normal? Oil question.

Ok I did my first oil change on my SS yesterday. To my suprise...there were no metal savings in the oil....i figured that since it only has 9000 miles on it and not 100% broken in, it should have some, but there was none. The only thing there was on the bolt was this gray goo that looked like non-hardening gasket silicon. Any one know what that is. The other thing is i read that these cars take about 5.5 quarts of oil...When i added the oil and before i started it it was full on 5.5 quarts....Then i started it and it was a little less then a quart low..put the rest of the sixth quart in and it still says its a little low. Now is it possible for some of there to require 6 1/4 quarts? I left it at 6 cuz im to afraid to put anymore (i heard you can do some serious damage by putting in to much oil). Need some input, didnt find the answer buy searching.

Well are you using stock size oil filter?? If you use a longer/bigger oil filter it will hold a lil more oil.

You are right DO NOT OVERFILL OIL.... if you remember any of your High School physics or what not liquids are not compressible!!!!! Overfilling it will damage your engine.... it's the principle of hydraulics something's gotta give and it won't be the oil.

Nah it should be fine, most people seem to use about that much. Have to wait and see if your motor uses oil. Also If I remember right you're supposed to check the oil when it's hot... try that next time you change it.. . put 5 1/2 quarts in drive it around to heat it up then check it. It won't hurt to be a half quart low for a lil bit and you never know it might be the right level. I put 5 1/2 in mine and it's always in the middle of the operating range on the stick.

Even 7 quarts of oil in an LS1 is completely safe.
