Default Replacing steering column in '98 Z28

I've been able to push on my steering wheel at the 7 o'clock position for years now and have it collapse a couple of inches. I finally had the dealer R&R my column to tighten the tilt bolts but was told they were just a little loose. He said that I need a whole new column because it's worn at the joint.

I'm leery of inheriting a similar problem from a used column. Anyone know if GM still makes the entire column (P/N)? Can I do any other upgrades at the same time, like a better turn stalk, etc.?

You can get your existing one rebuilt. A dealer won't offer this to you because of the rate at which they price labor. (You'd pay more than the car is worth at their rates to have them tear it apart to replace the worn component.)

Outside of the airbag, how difficult is it to swap out the column?
