Default Calve spring compressor tool

So I bought a Harborfreight special tool for this and man I have had a heck of a time removing stock springs of my LM7 heads!! First tool I broke and got a free replacement. Every time I crank down on the springs the longer leg always pulls off the spring... Had to use vice grips and it head the bottom jaws tight but don’t want the heads chipped or scrapped either doing that. Any tricks too this?

I think Brian Tooley Racing sells a tool that might work better.

I see autocorrect changed my spelling! Anyhow I have been using a C clamp and all is good.
