Default Oil Pressure questions

Quick question: My oil pressure is running at right over the 40 psi level on the oil pressure gauge. Is this about right? Also, when i come to a stop it drops to about 35 or so. Is this a problem? I grounded out the car pretty bad the otherday, but i havent seen any fluid drips. Im just wondering, because i never really paid a ton of attention to oil pressure, before i grounded out the front end of my car. (dont ask how, its embarrasing.) Any answers would be great.

That's about where the WS6 is. WOT it will go higher. The only time I've seen it go lower than 35 is when I was sitting in really bad Washington DC traffic. Once I got back out on the highway it was around 35-40 while cruising.

The Firehawk usually runs just a little higher...closer to 60.

While driving mine is around the 40 mark, give or take depending on temp, load, etc. When I come to a stop, fully warmed up, mine drops all the way down to the 20 psi line. It's always done that (it's a 98, accurate gauges), is that okay?

40 psi is good...

blkZ28spt ... your gauge is as accurate as any other year 98s have accurate temp gauges but that's the only diff as far as I know ... what RPM do you drop to at a stop? and how how it your motor running?

The hotter the motor the hotter the oil the thinner the oil... the lower the RPM the slower the oil pump is spinning (the oil pump is driven off the crank)

My car idles ~950RPM , 5w30 oil mobil 1 synthetic, engine temps ~190* and I sit at about 40 all the time... I hit 70-75 at WOT (ARE ported oil pump)

My RPM's at a stop are usually somewhere between 700 and 850 rpm hot, I think, not totally sure on that and of course it depends on whether you are in gera and have A/C on, etc. Regular Valvoline 5w30. Engine temps were nice and low till my fan switch crapped out on me now it regularly gets up to 205-215* range before fans kick in. It has always gone down to about 20 psi at a stop, long as I can remember anyway, have had car three years. It doesn't go below about 35 psi or so while cruising I don't think either.

Edit: Oh yeah my engine is running fine so far as I can tell. Getting roughly the same mileage I always have (not good, basically, lol), runs strong enough, etc. I do have a pretty loud ticking but I've heard LS1's just do that, esp with headers.

I did a title only search for oil pressure and got TONS of results. Was hard to get a consensus, but the good rule of thumb for all engines is 10 psi/1,000 RPM and for LS1's 7 psi/1,000 RPM the minimum to operate safely. I did see quite a few people showing 20 psi hot, and a lot that saw 30-35 hot. Not sure, but i could swear it seemed like the 98's showed the 20 more often......but I am going to assume that 20 psi hot is okay so long as it continues on up as you get in the gas. (35 would be PLENTY good)

possibly your sender unit has gone bad. Try jiggling the sender unit and seeing if the reading varies.

Just for reference crusing I am at 50 psi, WOT Im at 60 or better, and at idle im 42-45.

I ran some seafoam in the oil and it got rid of my varying oil pressure.... mine would vary 5-6psi some days....
