LS6 Harmonic balancer improper insta ?ll My friend recently acquired the ***** of all muscle cars, 1970 Chevelle SS LS6 450/HP 4sp. I show up days after the transporter dropped it off. I notice right away that all 3 pulleys are not aligned. Then he says the crank pulley wobbles. One look and its clear the balancer is at minimum 1/4" away from being where it should under the timing indicator, and going under I can see 1/4" of "more to go" between balancer and cover from the paint on the snout.
Looking around I see a front u-joint off of center, valve covers on opposite sides placing the plug wire holders in front (Fordish?), 6-7 feet of coolant overflow hose running back to a jug opposite the cap. I see plenty. This car was owned previously by a buffoon.
I say to him Dude ! That balancer needs made right ! OK he says. He's since then toodeling on the hi beam foot switch, inner left fender......He starts it up daily, thinking nothing of the balancer wobble that in my mind I can see the main bearing #1 being shaved down into the dark stuff.
Can someone back me up and try to helpe save this classic #' matching powerplant ? The last guy may have beaten that original balancer senseless. I say pull it, measure, examine, take somewhere, whatever. ...Or am I being silly ?
