Steering rag joint
Ive never had the feeling in my stomach to instantly take a **** the way I did at that moment when steering went out. Just letting you guys know that you may want to check yours out before this might happen to you. Oh also ive had no indicators that something might be wrong either just gave out. Anyways heres a pic, the other end is still bolted to the car so you guys can see how this literally split in half.
Has anyone experienced such a catastrophic safety failure as this before? I've never heard of this happening to anyone before. You would think for something as serious as being able to steer a vehicle the parts/system would be bulletproof.
Anyways enough of my rambling now to find a replacement part
it's most commonly known as a universal joint, and technically is a double cardan joint.
and the part looks to be the intermediate steering shaft, which connects the steering column inside the cabin to the rack
the picture with the sticker on the shaft does not look like the oem steering shaft... and i cannot immediately tell from the pic is wrong either.
For solid pieces, some of our folks have been going to Flaming River for their parts. There are a number of options there. (some high end)
I switched mine to the LS1 style after I bought the car with about 2 inches of steering slop, scary with big tires on a rutted road.
