Default Steering rag joint

Well was out with the T/A over the weekend and I stopped for gas. Once I was full, I pull out of the station to get to where im going and all of a sudden I have ZERO steering. There was no pressure at all on the steering wheel it just spun freely on its own until I managed to slam the brakes and jump out of the car to signal other drivers to GTFO of the way so they don't hit me or my car.

Ive never had the feeling in my stomach to instantly take a **** the way I did at that moment when steering went out. Just letting you guys know that you may want to check yours out before this might happen to you. Oh also ive had no indicators that something might be wrong either just gave out. Anyways heres a pic, the other end is still bolted to the car so you guys can see how this literally split in half.

Has anyone experienced such a catastrophic safety failure as this before? I've never heard of this happening to anyone before. You would think for something as serious as being able to steer a vehicle the parts/system would be bulletproof.

Anyways enough of my rambling now to find a replacement part

I'm not following what failed...either I'm dumb or I can't see it in the picture.

i wouldn't call it a rag joint... because it is not.
it's most commonly known as a universal joint, and technically is a double cardan joint.
and the part looks to be the intermediate steering shaft, which connects the steering column inside the cabin to the rack
the picture with the sticker on the shaft does not look like the oem steering shaft... and i cannot immediately tell from the pic is wrong either.

I have never been hands-on with the part but recall seeing somewhere that there is a plastic bushing that holds that U-joint on to the shaft?

For solid pieces, some of our folks have been going to Flaming River for their parts. There are a number of options there. (some high end)

Maybe he's talking about the LT1 piece since that actually has a rag joint?

I switched mine to the LS1 style after I bought the car with about 2 inches of steering slop, scary with big tires on a rutted road.
