Default 4th gen steering column differences

Hi all,

I have a tilt steering column from a 2000 and I'm trying to figure out if it's for a manual or auto equiped car. Is there a way to tell, externally, which it may be? It's complete from the steering wheel mount to the rack connection. Would a Haynes repair manual show this?

Thanks

The same column is used in the M6 or A4 F-body as there is no difference.

A column from an M6 car would have a button on the lock cylinder that you press to turn it back to the lock position.

^ Right. The automatic column also interlocks with the transmission handle on the console in lieu of this button on the lock cylinder. (So there are some differences.)

The columns will probably work together, but you'd need to take them apart and interchange those automatic or manual specific parts.

I over looked the lock cylinder button on a m6 column. A4 does have the shifter lock out cable, but the columns are a complete swap. If you are going from a m6 to A4 and want the shifter lock out you would just need to add the cable as it just bolts to the outside of the column. Everything else would be the same and is a very easy swap.

The only difference is the ignition cylinder. The park lock cable just screws onto the ignition switch, there's nothing internally in the column itself.
