security issues First time here. Just registered and I am new to this sort of thing so please forgive me if I don't do things right. I have a 98 LT1 belonging to my son that I was going to do some work on and suddenly it won't start. I know about the resistor issue. First it just would not start but after I locked the door once all the lights are flashing parking light dash etc. not just the security light. Had an issue with a dodge PU and the only way to stop it was the remote key fob. It had an after market theft deterrent. Question is, would the vats system flash all these lights? I cannot find an aftermarket unit anywhere. Nothing I have read helps. Car has no remote key fob with it. It seems to have a broken wire in the steering column resistor wire (tilt wheel pivot is loose) and I have a resistor but this will not work unless I can get the system reset. Going to go and give one more look for an aftermarket unit.
Locking the doors could arm the alarm. Putting the proper resistor key in the ignition and turning the key should also disarm it, in addition to having the original key fob.
BTW - You should be able to get another key fob and program it to the car. There are instructions on this site - in the Stereo and Electronics section, I recall. You should also be able to find a .pdf of the owners manual available for download, which will also help with these things.
If your resistor wire is broken, then you shouldn't be able to start the car in any circumstance and won't be able to turn off the alarm. Can you reconnect the wire, even temporarily with a jumper?
