Default E-brake handle issue

I have a 2000 Firebird T/A ls1 auto. Just removed the e-brake handle and now cannot figure how to reinstall it. the rod inside with the spring just will not go into place properly. Is the loop on the bottom of the rod suppose to be pointing down? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, the loop points down. I remember putting this thing together, and it's a wonky deal. You have to kind of point the handle downward when you install it so it catches the loop. Then hold the handle upwards lightly when you install the screw.

Going to attempt it again. I have tampered with 3rd gens and other vehicles e-brake handles with no issue. I feel like Im wasting time on such a simple fix.
Thanks for the response.

Success...
