Default which is easier

to change the oil pan gasket with the tranny out or in the car,?

I know you have to drop the engine but I think the transmission should be fine.
my chevy dealer quoted me 5.5 hours of labor to replace the gasket on my 1999 TA. I passed and just keep checking the oil level.

You drop the k member and support the engine from above, at least according to the service manual. The pull the pan and reseal it. Pays the same for either m6 or A4 and doesn't mention a thing about either in the steps.

If you lift the engine as high as possible and lower the K-member, you'll have plenty of room. I did it not too long ago. Depending on the mileage ....etc.. you might consider doing the motor mounts and possibly even the oil pump. With the engine and k-member in that state, the mounts are cake to replace.
