A few weeks ago I got a check engine light which gave me code P1441. It turned out to be the EVAP purge solenoid (I was able to blow right through when it was not energized). I replaced it, and no check engine light ever since.
However, I decided to tap on the old solenoid and this is what came out. Are these particles from carbon that gummed up the valve or are these charcoal particles meaning that my canister is shot and I need to replace it?
Those are particles from the canister. The canister, and the EVAP system in general, is an emissions component, so how you wish to handle it may depend on your need for emissions compliance.
Thanks...I just ordered a new canister and a spare purge valve cause I'm in NJ and need to be emissions compliant. Is the canister difficult to replace (I know where it is, and it seems to be strapped in a tight spot behind the wheel well).
