hey guys. ive read a billion headlight post, but all of em seem to be about faulty motors or whatever... i have a different issue, while changing out a faulty headlight motor on my 98 firebird, i broke a wierd looking bolt. its one with a torx female on one end, 10mm thread on the other end, & a thick shoulder & a plastic washer/sleeve that looks like a piviot point for the headlight assembly (ill try to figure out how to attach a pic) ...the dang thing just snapped off on me late last night (& for the record i was only using my small 1/4" drive ratchet & a 10mm gearwrench, so anybody attempting this repair id advise to use caution, these lil bolts WILL Break Easily) & now ive gotta find a replacement bolt or im gonna be walking to work tomorrow. so if anybodys ran into this before, & know where to find a replacement or has an ideal on how to fix it i would greatly appreciate it. thanx! it's a shoulder bolt, might be able to source one that will work from a fasten-all or possibly in the specialty bolt section of lowes, home depot, or hardware store. If not, call the dealer, maybe they have one, or if there is a junk yard or someone parting out a car near you.
thanx, i truly appriciate the advice... & thats what i ended up doing. i went to lowes & found a 1" long shoulder bolt thatd fit & found a nylon sleeve/spacer type thang to fit it as well... & by "fit" of coarse i mean- some modification required... haha! i just ended up cutting the nylon sleeve to length & hogged it out with a drill bit, then enlarged the hole that the tip of the origional 10mm bolt stuck thru so my slightly larger bolt would go thru it, then i used nylon locknuts so that i could tighten it just enough, without making it so tight that it would prevent the bucket from swinging ...all that headache for a dang intermittently working headlight motor ...but hey, at least it gave me an excuse to install my lmc truck headlight upgrade. i also contacted "hawks" per someone elses recommendation, so if they contact me with a part number or availibility ill post it... thanx again!
ok... broken oddball little bolt issue... i contacted ryan adams at hawks motorsports & sent him the pic of that broken headlight "piviot" bolt & hes shipping me out a couple of them (always good to have a back up in case another one snaps) ...ryan at hawks was super cool & very helpful & said anything i need in the future, espically anything like these little oddball thangs that u just can not get from the local hardware store (& trust me, i tried) to just contact him, he can get just about anything for these cars... he also said that on wierd lil stuff like this, sending a pic is worth a thousand words, as the ol sayin goes... so figured id pass this information along so as to help anybody else in the same predicament in the future... thanx
