For an average 12,000 mile year, you spend $80 while the synthetic user spent only $60. And you did four changes while they did only two... twice the labor costs and twice the number of filters. Even if you do your own oil changes, how much is your time worth? So using synthetics provides better protection as well as saving time and money.

It's your money and time to spend if it makes you feel more comfortable with your maintenance but making a general recommendation for others to avoid the advances in technology is not particularly helpful. And to get to the real heart of the matter... the color of the oil has very little to do with its effectiveness as a lubricant or cleaning agent. Thousands of tests have proven that.
For me the time is the big factor. I like working on my truck but oil changes are pretty boring and after doing dozens and dozens of them, I prefer to change it twice a year rather than four times. Also factor in the time to take the used oil to an autoshop for disposal.

Buy a synthetic oil and high quality filter. I've used Mobil 1 oil/filters for years. I always go the 1 year on the Extended Life Mobil1 and EL filter. Amsoil, Royal Purple, etc. are all great oils that last 10-15k or a year in a normal, non-race car engine. 5 QT jug of Mobil1 is $26 at Wal-Mart. NO FRAM!!! oil filter. Mobil1, K&N, WIX, etc.

Switch to a quality brake fluid with high boiling points. Pentosin, Brembo, ATE, etc. Skip that generic brand stuff.

Buy quality products, get longer service intervals and longevity from your car.

My wife's 06 Altima has over 100k worth of Mobil1 EL oil changes (annually for at least 6 years) with no issues.

The 3000 mile oil change is very old thinking that keeps getting passed down, all while the oil companies are more than happy to oblige. It's just marketing. Look at Mercedes and BMW oil change intervals. All very high.
