Is this car still in stock form? The problem could be caused by something not right in the coolant system such as defective radiator, heater core, water pump, thermostat, steam vent tube or air being trapped in the system. Have you always used coolant in your system and when was the last time you flushed the system?

Well if your lucky when you pop the radiator cap open you see coolant and not a ton of rusted water as that could spell trouble.

Flush your coolant. And when you refill it, put your car on ramps, turn it on, make sure you have no bubbles in your coolant before you top it off/ cap it.

It's a really cheap and easy way to start eliminating possible problems.

Something is not right.

In a normal situation: the coolant will expand as the system heats up and coolant will flow to the bottle and as the car cools down, the coolant contracts and that excess coolant is siphoned back into the radiator.

In your situation, something is causing pressure to move from the radiator to the bottle after the car is shut off and for that process to "burp". Perhaps this is due to some heat sink after the car is shut off and you have gas in the system?

I would first let the car cool down and then open the radiator for a check. If the fluid isn't up to the top, then the first thing to do would be to get a pressure test.

If it was the T stat if would overheat sitting and all the time.

When you shut the car off, the residual temp increases as the airflow and coolant flow stops which increases the pressure in the system. If the cap is weak it will let it bypass out into the coolant tank/ground.

I would keep it simple like everyone said, start with a radiator cap, feel upper and lower hoses to make sure you have flow. upper hose will be hotter then the lower hose. does the heater work? when engine is up to temp and fans on, do you feel hot air being pulled off the radiator?

Is all of the air out of the system and do you see circulation of the coolant inside the radiator when the cap is and the engine is running? Hopefully the OP reports back their findings so others can benefit from the information and the thread can have closure.
