Lifter tick? I’m new to car world and trying to do **** myself, a week ago was trying to retune car while cruising something went thought it was rod knock but when I pulled the heads I had a collapsed lifter, cam lobes looked fine so I replaced all lifters and still hear something ticking could it be as simple as there is some varnish inside the lifter not letting it function how it should? Any help is appreciated
If this residual tapping sound was not present before the day the lifter went bad, then I'd say you either have a poorly circulating pushrod or a misaligned/loose rocker arm. When lifters are serviced and the same pushrods are to be reused, it's always a good idea to spray something gunk-removing solution like B12 Chemtool into the pushrods prior to putting everything back together so that you help to get rid of any oil blockages that may have contributed to the lifter's failure. But since you already finished the job, if you're short on free time, you may want to consider using an engine-cleaning product like Marvel Mystery Oil or Seafoam a while before your next oil change. It can unclog small deposits and help clean the engine in general.
To differentiate from a rod knock, determine whether the tap gets louder when accelerating from a low RPM (should be easy to tell and unmistakable). If not, then it's most probably something in the upper end.
