99 Z28 A4 - Shift Interlock / Ignition Switch issue
My key out of nowhere, refused to turn to the 'insert/remove' position one day when I parked and tried to remove the key. It did turn to the off position, but couldn't turn it to the point required to remove the key. I ended up having to push in and really turn HARD to get it to that position and quickly slip the key out before the switch turned back into the on/off position. When putting my key back in, I randomly run into the same problem.. I can't turn it to the 'on' position without really FORCING it, and by forcing it, I mean with enough pressure to literally break the ignition switch. I ended up pulling the shift console up because I believe that the shift interlock cable is refusing to allow the key to properly turn because it thinks the car is in gear. I adjusted the cable but I can't get to the happy median. I managed to get it so that I can turn the key, but now it is possible to move my shift lever while the car is off and no key in the ignition. Any idea as to what is wrong and how I can correct this?
