Default 1998 gas cap leak

Hello,

I have a 1998 camaro and was wondering if anybody else had the same fuel leak issue, sometimes i have a little fuel in the fuel door, but i constantly have this black residue on the bumper that smells like fuel, i don’t believe i have a 1998 specific gas cap. Has anybody else had this issue and solved it? Hoping buying an oem 98 gas cap will solve my issue. Also are the caps suppose to vented?

According to the Parts Manual, the 1998 gas cap is only used for that year. It list the part number as 22616291 or AC/Delco # GT222.

I ordered one of these a few years ago for my '98, but I have a different part number on file (GM 19153383 / ACD GT299).

peterpar always has excellent and accurate information though, so the part number must have changed at some point.

Update: I ended up ordering the AC Delco gt299 gas cap, and i filled the tank up and didn’t seem to fix it completely but definitely thinks it leaks out less, it seems to fit better and the new one seems to turn the opposite direction when you let go of it.. so not sure gotta really do some more testing.

Both numbers are correct... the original GM parts manual lists the '98 gas cap as 22616291 but that part number was later superseded to 19153383. It is still listed as being specific to the '98 Camaro - earlier and later models use different cap part numbers.

The changes can be significant or quite minor. For instance, the earlier gas caps had no retaining strap and English labeling with text such as "TIGHTEN TO 3 CLICKS" (later caps had retaining straps and symbols instead of text). Yet the only visible difference between the '98 and later models is the shape of the barb on the end of the retaining strap. I don't know if that difference may be important based possibly on the shape/size of the hole for strap to attach in.
