You guys that have the ability and experience to work on your own cars are very fortunate. It's no fun being at the mercy of shops, plus the expense involved.
I am older (71 now) and have some health issues to go along with the normal aches and pains of doing most anything, from lawn care to simple oil changes. Detailing and oil changes are about all I can do at this point but I have found good repair shops that do the work well.
Within the last few years I have had the rear end re-built for $900+ and the struts/shocks done at over $1,000. I bet you guys could do the same jobs for 1/4 what I paid. Enjoy your abilities and good fortune because it does get more difficult as you get older. The thrill of driving never leaves but you do have to find others to fix your rides.

I agree that they should have spoken to me. Hindsight, I also should have asked what the problem was and what was the resolution. What I will say is that everything had gone so badly, previously, that I just wanted to get the car back. I had to steal it after I was ghosted. I drove 60 miles to get it on a weekend with hopes that it wasn't blocked in so that I could tow it out of there.

Absolutely - and the time. We avoid all that time that's spent getting a vehicle to a shop, waiting for the repair, picking it up ....etc. I can leave the vehicle in the driveway until the parts come in.
While I'm sure my wife appreciates the work I do on her Suburban when it needs a repair, she never has to go through any of that.

And as for the money for the mods: I have always looked at something broke as an opportunity - an opportunity to make it faster, ride better or look better.
