Default Trip odometer

My 99's trip odometer resets and the gauges mess up on startup sometimes, but not all the time.

After searching on my problem and determining that it is probably the battery / connection, not a reaplcemewnt of the display (I hope). Since this problem only occurs if the car sits for awhile (20 minutes or more, sometimes less)

I know there was a service bulletin about this. I would likt o know if replacing the battery alone has solved this for people. I am having a hard time figuring out how the battery is the sole cause for this problem.

Also if I need the gauges replaced how much is that gonna run? I assume I have to order from GM with mileage inserted.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The only way I lose the mileage is if the battery is disconnected. So I would say it’s safe to say that it's a power interruption problem to the instrument cluster. I'd start at the battery since that is the easiest. Check grounds, that sort of thing. I've heard of crazy things happening if the PCM or BCM has a bad ground.

If for some reason it is the instrument cluster. You just order one from GM ( $$$ ) or check out eBay for a nice used one. Mileage is NOT stored in the instrument cluster. It is stored separately in a computer module (don't remember the proper name), and is difficult to change or roll back. So no worries there

My buddy's 99 WS6 does the same thing, I will ask him what he did to fix his, but I don't think it was that big of a deal...

Clean and tighten your battery cables. Been there, done that. Only happened to me in the winter.

I recently had my cables disconnected when I did my Lid. The cables are as tight as I could get them and they were spotless. Once I get a day without rain I'll trace the cables and look for loose connections. I'm pretty sure it is the original battery also so it may be due for a replacement anyways.

Thanks for the help!

I should say, I did replace my battery first (car wouldn't start), and it seemed that fixed my problem. Then the problem came back. That when I noticed the loose connection. Haven't had any issues since then.

Where was the loose connection? At the instrument cluster? at the battery?

It's a problem with the instrument cluster. Mine is doing the same thing after a cold night.

GM have issued a service bulletin for this (99-08-49-009).

I have a .jpg of the bulletin here but it's too large to download.

My car does it 95% of the time. Even when I turn the car off when getting gas it will reset which leads me to believe it is a loose connection, or not enough powerin the battery.

My 98TA's trip odometer resets itself to zero as you drive along. It usually resets after a couple of miles but it has gone as long as 30 miles before resetting.

Mine was a loose battery connection. Ever since the battery was replaced and the connection was tightened, no problems.

So if I put another cluster in the correct mileage on the vehicle will be shown on the gauges. Just wanted to know before i decide how to get mine fixed.
