Default A/C making bad noises

Hey folks, may wifes '98 T/A has some new sound coming from the A/C fan. At first it sounded like something (leaves maybe) was stuck in it but now it sounds more like the fan is hitting the air box. Is this something I can fix myself (dash removal, etc) or am I in for a big $$ repair?

Thanks,

Ya, its always had a vibration when you had the fan on high but now it definitely sounds like a problem. I just don' know how much trouble it will be to get to the problem. If the dash comes out easily enough I'll try to tackle it myself but I'm hoping its not a $300-$400 repair shop issue.

One time on the way home from a trip, I felt a decrease in cooling from my AC. I could hear a humming sound. It was the fan, much louder than normal. I was really aggravated, thinking I had an expensive problem. It hasn't done it again since then (a couple of months ago). Knock on wood!

Sounds like you might want to check the blower motor

It looks like you should only have to remove one piece of the dash to get to it, under/behind the glovebox - the "right closeout/insulator panel". There's a couple of flanges/retainers on the left edge of the panel to unhook/slide apart, and two "push-in retainers" on the front edge of the panel. Then there's an electrical connection to disconnect, and three bolts to take out, to be able to remove the blower motor. (When reinstalling, these bolts tighten to 2.3 N-m (20 lb-in).)

"Inspect the blower motor for deposits of foreign material, cracked blades, a loose impeller retainer, improper impeller alignment."

For 93-02 Firebirds/Camaros: If it's just the impeller/fan, the part number is 52472650, list price of $20. Or if the whole thing needs replacing, the part number for the whole blower motor assembly is 52498954 (previous part number was 52481553), GM list price of $157.

Thanks for the reply ACW. Sounds like more good news than bad. I'll look at it this weekend.
