Default Oil Pressure

I've noticed lately that when the engine temperature gets up to between 180 and 210, that my oil pressure has been dropping....sometimes to almost halfway between 20 and 40 when I'm at a stop. If I rev the engine up to around 3K the pressure goes back up to a little over 40, and then drops back down. If I'm cruising down the road the pressure is right around 40. In the past I seem to rememeber my pressure always staying somewhere in the neighborhood of 40, usually a bit more actually, under all conditions. Now the weather has just gotten warmer here in Cleveland....so maybe its been cold for so long that I just forgot that the pressure was like this during the summer....however I think not.

My car has almost a 100,000 on the clock....I run Mobil One 10W-30 full synthetic. Just checked the oil level....its full. I've heard some stuff about the '98s having bad oil pumps. Should I be worried, or just keep an eye on it?

Probly keep a eye on it but with 100k on the clock it might be time for a new oil pump.

Mobil1 10W-30 is a very thin 30W when at 212 F. Something along the lines of 10.5cst. With 100K on your LS1 I would run either Mobil 1 0W-40 or Mobil 1 Truck @ SUV 5W-40. Both will give better oil pressure and maintain a thicker lubricant film throughout the engine. I routinely perform oil analysis' on my LS1 and the best results come from 40W oil. HTH

I gained some pressure with Mobil 1 0W-40 in my 01 Z28. I actually run 5W-50 in my 94 Z28 to keep the pressure up under acceleration. I've done that since the car was new and it now has 95,000 miles on it and still runs great.

whether its a european formula or not i dont know, but it is the oil of choice for porsche, or so the bottle says! I run Mobil 1 0W-40, and it is a supremely awesome oil. Im sure the car had 10W-30 when i got it from the dealer, and it always ran pretty low on pressure down below 30 even at stops in the summer. Prolly close to 100 degrees outside, and the engine would also heat up quickly. Once I switched to Mobil 1 0W-40 both problems subsided. The car takes longer to warm up at stops, and the oil pressure is rarely below 40, unless i have been on long highway trips, or it is very hot outside. This is a great oil. It also performed very well in my oil analysis, its flashpoint was above the tested range! Thats what I like to see from an oil!
