Would an 8.8" rear be a better option? I've heard talk that the 12 bolt isn't the best option, and getting an 8.8" would be a lighter and more reliable option.

Extreme Chassis (not sure if they're a sponsor) supposedly sets these up.

Just as an update to this thread, more for search purposes than anything else, the problem was diagnosed as a wheel bearing and axle. Supposedly, the right rear axle was bent, and the wheel bearing was bad. They quoted me a crazy price for the repair, at which point I sourced my own parts (master install kit, ring and pinion gear, rear end cover, crush collar) and had another shop install it. I told the other shop to provide an axle if it was needed, and to check on the condition of the original ring and pinion and the diff. They said that there was no problems with the axles (they weren't bent), and that the ring and pinion gears and diff were still in good condition (I provided a ring and pinion just to change ratios, since they were already in there).

Cliff's Notes: Wheel bearing caused the howling sound, getting other stuff replaced while fixing the bearing was cheap in labor.

That's the thing... mine was just the wheel bearing... I changed my ring and pinion out even though it was good just because they were already in there. Sadly, now it's almost as loud as before I got it fixed, just that now it's the gear set whining instead of the wheel bearing. But you don't notice the sound when you stomp on the gas with 4.10s

mine was rear axle bearings. replaced both sides and one axle shaft, because it showed wear. easy to do. picked up a perfectly good, used, stock axle cheap. A lot of guys upgrade axles, so finding good used ones is easy, and cheap.
