Default Oil in Radiator

I have some oil in the radiator of my '97 SS Camaro. There does not seem to be any water in the engine oil. Any suggestions on the problem.

It is your head gasket (or possibly a cracked block/head--not likely). Do not drive it until it is fixed. It will be a PITA to do but now the the perfect time for head/cam with a new opti and water pump.

Good Luck

When I had this happen it was the tranny cooler in the radiator begining to go, the tranny runs at higher pressure that is why coolant was not able to get into the tranny though it would have had I not caught it when I did. Eventually it SERIUOSLY failed and I noticed the tranny shifting bad turned out most of the ATF pumped into the coolant making the tranny low. When I found what had happened I removed the radiator cap before shutting the car off because there is residual pressure in the cooling system till it cools where the tranny goes to zero pressure as soon as the engine is off.
Honestly I don't know if the SS was available with an A4 but I think it did have an oil cooler that used engine coolant. I would check those long before even thinking of head gasket, head or block cracks.

Is there a transmission cooler even though it has a 6 speed? I have noticed the transmission shifting harder. There is not a lot of oil in the radiator, but enough to notice. I have had blown head gaskets and other engine issues in the past where water got into the engine, but never had oil get into the water. Since the water pressure is higher than the pressure on the engine side it would seem oil could not come into the radiator. The only exception if the blown head gasket was on the pressure side of compression and then I would only get gas/oil mixture blowing into the radiator.

No tranny cooler with an M6 I was a bit unclear I was unsure wether the SS package meant M6 or if it was still optional A4 or M6. The A4 has a tranny cooler in the radiator and I believe most of the Camaros had oil coolers which pumped coolant down to the oil filter area, a problem there could result in oil in the coolant.

are you sure it's oil??? theres build up like rust and corrosion in the radiator and over flow that turns a brownish color and can change the color of the coolant especially if it's dexcool. i just cant see the coolant having oil in it and the oil not having coolant in it

Yeah mine's got an oil cooler. You might check out that oil filter "mount." If the passages are damaged, it could run oil right into the coolant area and the lines would carry it back up to the radiator. I would block off that passage and flush the radiator and drive it a while to see if the problem creeps back up.
