Default Head gasket question...

I just took the head off of a 2.4L I4 DOHC engine in a 98 plymouth breeze because they found oil in the coolant....no joke...everything in the coolant system was a off-yellow creamy sludge...so the oil is getting into the coolant.

Well as i got the head off and checked the gasket, there didnt appear to be any problems with sealing between the passages through the head. Where else could oil get into the coolant? I thought that the only place was the head....am I wrong?

The head looked good, but im going to take it into the machine shop and have it planed and checked for cracks, etc.

I also found small chunks of RTV in the coolant passages of the block..some of these chunks were blocking the smaller passages...but I cant think of where they would come from...

Please help with any ideas...TIA.

Josh

How long have you had the car?
Could the previous owner have added coolant to the oil (don't laugh I've seen people do dumber things)
Other than a cracked block I can't off hand think of another way

It's my girlfriends sisters car...I dont think she has ever added oil to the coolant, but that was brought up as my dad and I were trying to figure it out. She said she checked the coolant reservoir one day and saw the oil in there....but again I dont know if that was the first time she checked the coolant reservoir or not. Ok so there isnt any other place where the oil may have entered the coolant with the exception of a cracked head or block?

I had a bad head gasket on a ford that appeared to be good. My assumption was that sometimes you just cant tell. Especially when its not a motor that'll really blow the **** out of a head gasket.
