Reviving this thread. My son has a 98 Camaro V6 and his temperature gauge reads 30+ degrees too hot. I verified this by hooking an OBDII scanner up and when reading about 240 on the factory gauge its actually running between 205 and 210, like I suspected.
Does anyone know how to correct or replace the temperature gauge?
Not really interested in putting an aftermarket gauge in the car.
TIA,
Jay

Finally did this mod. The parts stores around here failed miserably on getting the right pigtail for the 3 pin sensor. Fortunately I'm not the type to avoid pondering things and seeing similarities.
Pick up a TPS pigtail for your car. It is the same connector. Since I have the neato Delphi terminal crimpers I ordered the connector & terminals from Racetronix, one of the sponsors on the right here :-). Their connector kit was $5 per and looks OEM when done (correct wire colors). I get picky on making sure my wiring always follows GM conventions.
The parts store TPS pigtail is gonna likely have 3 black wires in it and will need spliced (soldered) onto the harness...and was $15 at my local autozone.
I highly doubt the terminals would fit into the connector housing very well unless crimped correctly as they are VERY small. I suppose a person could crimp them as best they can and LIGHTLY solder them.

Same with the temp gauge....it reads a average and shows it to you SO you don't see the gauge spiking high or low as the Tstat open etc BUT you are seeing a correct reading of the average temp of the engine. If it starts getting hooter the temp gauge will go up, same if it runs cooler.
It's not an average reading because the '99+ cars will indicate just a hair under 210° before the coolant temp has even reached 210°. If the above quote were true, then coolant temp would have to exceed 210° for quite some time before the average would reach that value - and this is simply not what actually occurs. It is, in fact, possible to set the fan values in such a way as to prevent the coolant from ever reaching even 200°, and yet the stock gauge will still show just a hair under "210" once actual temp values have exceeded 185-190°F or so. I've logged this several times with my scanner during various tunes in the past.
