Uh I'm a newbie but wouldn't a stretched serpentine belt or a faulty tensioner cause the same problemss?

Tensioner was checked during one of the many times i've had the belt off and the belt has less than 200 miles on it, i hope it's still good.

I'm having the same issue with my 2000 WS6. I drive it every couple of months (but start it every week) and last time I took it for a spin the voltage was low then popped back up after a couple of miles. Now it won't come up at all. I was going to replace the alternator tomorrow but now this has me wondering if I should

Check the excitor wire, the wire that plugs into the top of the alternator. It supposed to tell the alternator when to charge. Could be broke, mine was. It´s a red thin one.

I was having a fluctuating voltmeter bouncing between 13 and 14 volts, and so I replaced the battery thinking it was on its way out. The problem didn't get any better with a new battery, so I started thinking about the alternator.

After reading the above post, I pulled off the top connector tonight to inspect the excitor wire and connection, and plugged it back in, and now my problem is gone. The wire wasn't broken, but I think it just had a bad/dirty connection, and just unplugging it and plugging it back in was enough to make a more solid electrical connection on the pin. So I think I have fingered the problem. Thanks for pointing me in this direction, you saved me buying a new alternator.
