Default power steering replacement

Hello all. I've got a power steering issue and i think the pump might be busted. It must be leaking fluid like a mad man because i have to fill it up about every 3 days. In just 3 days time, it gets almost bone dry. I've tried the stop-leak fluid and its just extended the refill about a day or so. Does it sound like it needs to be replaced or just a simple fix? If it does need to be replaced, is this very difficult to do yourself or should i take it somewhere. I have an SS so its got the cooler, not sure if that makes a difference or not in the difficulty.

Thanks!

Is the leak in the pump or the cooler?

The cooler is notorious for leaking.

it might be the cooler...didn't think of that. i'm not at all familiar with how the power steering system works, so i might need to do a little learning sometime soon.

Thanks for the link!

Did you check the steering rack for leaks?

You might want to clean out the engine bay real good. Get rid of any evidence on your leaks. Fill the power steering pump, and take it for a drive. Every now and then check for a leak. This will help give you a better idea of where the leak is coming from. If it is indeed the pump, and from what I understand you not having much knowledge on the system, I would suggest taking it somewhere to get it replaced. To just remove the pump you are looking at removing the intake inducts, draining coolant, removing hoses, belt, etc. Just a little extra insurance to have someone that knows what they are doing work on the car.

Do what BlutVonSchwachen suggested. The pump is easy to change out. It looks like a lot of work at first, but it really isn't.

Step 1: Go to Auto Zone and rent a power steering pulley installer/remover kit. Have them explain to you how it works because it looks tricky at first, but it's a really simple tool

Step 2: Remove the belt. Then remove the pulley with the tool. Disconnect two line from the pump. Now you can remove the two bolts holding the pump.

Step 3: Take off the two clips holding the reservoir and take the pump to Auto Zone to recieve that $20 core exchange.

It's important that none of the PS fluid leaks on the alternator. If the leak is above the alternator then it could mess it up as it did mine and many others.

I'm a little curious to why you said to drain the coolant? I looked on AllData at my work and it doesnt say anything about draining coolant. I looked it up because my power steering pump is leaking nicely and best of all onto the alternator, I hope it doesnt mess it up before I replace the pump...geez Id be real pissed if i have to replace the alternator.

He probably said that because there's a coolant line right in front of the PS pulley that gets in the way when you're trying to use the PS pulley remover/installer tool. All you have to do is disconnect the line and let the coolant empty out. You're looking at about 1/2 a gallon of fluid coming out...no too much.

If the alternator does mess up, send it to get repaired with quality parts at a electrical shop. Don't buy one at a auto parts store. Many of those alternators are refurbished alternators, so they go out pretty often.

one thing u might want to confirm is that the fluid is not leaking into the cars cooling system. i had that problem with mine , it was actually leaking into the coolant through the cooling tube that is spliced into the rad hose. its a real mess to clean up let me tell u. just something to check. it took me too long to figure out where all the fliud was going.wish i new sooner.
