How much play should my driveshaft have i have a 01 TA 6speed and it makes a knocking noise 1000 to 1500 in every gear .I jacked it up grabbed driveshaft behind joint in the front and could move it about a quater of a inch up and down the dealer said it is normal play in the driveshaft and that the sound is normal although i cant see how a thumping noise that sounds like a out of balanced tire that goes away when i let off the gas can be normal?

 

i have the same thump problem but it just does it in 1st and 2ed sometimes. i would also like to know what is causing this.

 

A quarter inch sounds like a lot to me.

 

depends on if the play is between the tranny splines and the drive shaft splines, try and isolate the driveshaft so that u can check the ujoints,normally ujoints wil vibrate at speed,not always, if you have a decent amount of miles, check the u joints or replace them. output shaft splines could be wore, but those are generally heat treated to be hard. if the ujoints have play,replace them. u couldalso be hearing normal gear noise< my tranny gears are more noticable since the poly mount,manuals are not as quiet as autos.PS-pull the driveshaft out and check the condition of the splines

 

sounds like u-joints to me.
