Bad Alternator??

Bad Alternator?? well it only seems to happen at night when i have my headlights on and i have a system in my car along with taylor 10.5mm wires if that makes a difference, but my gauge gets low when im sitting at a stop light it will slowly go down and tonight it went down lower than the 13. my car didnt act funny and i have a new optima red top in so it cant be the battery, could it be my alternator is getting ready to go out?? my car has no problems starting up or anything like that, what could be the problem??? also how do i rebuild the alternator and what do i need to do it, i heard it was alot cheaper than buying a new one that will crap out on me.
i think the reason it drops when you sit at a light, is because the alternator doesnt really do much below 850 RPMs and i'm pretty sure our a4 cars idle lower than that in D, in park or neutral it will idle high enough. mine does the same thing, but it never really starts ******* anything up when it does it. new high perf. ones i think are about $1 per amp.
