"STRANGE" light switch

"STRANGE" light switch Im just wondering if anyone has had this problem.normally when u turn the light switch to the first position only the running lights and fog lights come on but now when i turn the switch to the first position the headlights flip up as well so im not sure if it is a faulty switch or something else ,but this problem started the same day my drivers side headlight motor started grinding when it goes down.Im wondering if this has happened to anyone else or if anyone has any ideas as to what it might be other than the switch itself? thnx

Yes, you can flip the gears on a 99. There's instructions out there (either on this site or the internet somewhere on pulling the headlight motor apart and flipping the gear around.) I'd search but I'm at the office right now and they've got half the internet blocked... 
Flipping the gear will only buy you time. The gears are plastic and will eventually wear out again.
When the gears in the headlight motors start to wear out, the headlights will start to do odd things, like go up and down when you set the alarm, pop up when they shouldn't have popped up yet, etc. You'll also hear that grinding noise that you said you heard. The little plastic gears in the headlight motors wearing out is a common pontiac problem...you're now a member of a very large club that have had to flip/replace the gears.
Replace (or flip) the gears in the headlight motor and I bet your headlight problems will go away...
