For all the OBD system readiness tests to run and flip to a complete status. The OBD system will not pass an emissions scan test until these tests have completed. Nor will you be able to tell if a repair you have performed has actually fixed the DTC, because after resetting the PCM the SES light will not appear whether the part is still broken or not until the test has run.

This is why you will fail (or more correctly, be rejected for) an emissions scan test if you try to hide an SES light by resetting the PCM right before they scan it....all the tests will still show incomplete until the OBD drive cycle is completed.

PS. The OBD drive cycle proceedure is just a way to speed up the process of getting all tests to a complete status. Eventually, they will complete on their own with normal driving, usually within a week/couple hundered miles.

Depends on what you mean by "help." Your car is OBDII. Any vehicle 1996 and newer is required by law to use the OBDII system. If you wanted, you could go through the drive cycle and see if any codes would be thrown or not, but that's about all it will do unless you have repaired something or are trying to figure something out. If you did want to do that, make sure to complete the entire cycle twice. Can't skip any parts. If you are trying to accelerate and someone cuts you off, you'll have to start from there again and finish the cycle. Doing it twice is a sure way to make sure no codes are thrown as soft faults require the fault to be seen twice by the pcm.
