Alternator problem

Alternator problem Well the car will start but run at 10 volts, then i do something like turn on the headlights and it goes up about 1 volt. Soooooooo Why the heck would this happen??? Rotor or regulator?

Well the mechanic thinks he fixed the problem, he said the computer was producing a spike in the exciter wire voltage, so he wired the exciter wire to a positive voltage and used a bulb in the line to bring it down to the 9 volts required. Thanks for the input.
