When I was looking at Optima batteries recently, I was told that there are two sizes that will "fit" our cars. A 75 (stock size) fits with no problems. The more common 78, however, is a little bit larger. It will fit under the hood, but not as well as the appropriate 75.

Optima sells a Holdown specifically for their batteries that is contoured to go around the center cylinder shell and clamp the battery correctly.

The 34/78 Optima should have come with a new plastic hold down.... 2 ford ones and the GM hold down should be in a bag taped to the top.
As far as the fit, if you take out the battery, then remove the coolant overflow reservoir from the car, you can remove the lip on the battery tray(nearest the fill tube)I used a hacksaw.
